Tarpons Rolled in '24 with 14 District Titles!

The Tarpon Class of 2024 arrived during the COVID-19 epidemic, survived the Eye of Cat 4/5 Hurricane Ian, and once again proved the CHS adage, as they did after Hurricane Charley, that "When the going gets tough, the tough get going."

The 2024 Tarpons won a record 14 District titles, Basketball made it to the final four, and Wrestling produced the Tarpons' first-ever female state champ in that sport, junior Iyonna Church-Ross (28-0). Eight (8) Tarpon Head Coaches were named Coaches of the Year by Sun Preps. Our overall Student Athlete GPA was 3.45. The Silver King Marching Band won its highest-ever honor, a Superior rating, and our Robotic Team won State and earned the top spot at the World competition this summer.

THE Academic and Athletic School, Baby!

Vanguard 35 Manatee 27 FINAL

Have to admit I spent most of my time chatting it up with Mark Cannon, but what I did see pretty much validated my suspicions I had about Manatee going into the game. Primarily the total lack of physicality on the part of the Manatee OL, and then the unexpected domination of a young Vanguard offence over the Manatee supposed strenght.....its defense. Manatee was missing 2 RB's and 2 WR's due to the state track meet where they will be competing to bring home a state titlle in the 4A 4X100 event.........but all in all I believe Vanguard had more to be pleased about, and Manatee has some things it should probably be concerned about heading into the 2024 season.

RIP MIKE FORD

Former Sarasota Sailor and USF running back Mike Ford passed away Monday. This is a very tough one for me. I went to school with both of his parents. I never coached Mike but I coached against him many times.

The first time I met Mike my flag football team scrimmaged his team in the now defunct Ringling Redskin league. He was twice the size of practically every player on my team. Of course I wanted to see his birth certificate.

Mike was nice kid and very likable. Many of the players that knew me from coaching called me Coach Mark for years even though I had not coached for some time. Mike was the last one to stop calling me that. I got a kick out of that.

I could go on and on with Mike Ford stories. Right now my heart is heavy and I’m fighting some deep sadness. We communicated last week and now he is gone.

Q&A with Bokey athlete David Parks

How did the high school football season go overall?

“We went 10-3 and won our district. By most standards it was a pretty good year but at Seminole the ultimate goal every year is a state championship. Personally, I was able to showcase my athleticism as a 2nd year varsity starter. At a school that consistently produces top level college athletes, that is something to be proud of for sure. Primarily I started at receiver plus I got reps throughout the year at TE, RB and QB. I was the punter for the second year in a row too.”

What are your plans now with sports and workouts?

“I was on the weight lifting team again this year. I traded my track spikes for hockey skates though. My younger brother is a freshman at Seminole and plays AAA travel hockey. I figured if I end up enrolling early next year, this might be my last chance for him and I to play on the same team in any sport so we are playing high school hockey together for Seminole County. I'm playing 7on7 too. It's only players from Seminole High School. We've been jelling and coming together well. We've won 3 tournaments.”

How do you feel your team will do next football season?

“We bring a lot of really talented players back on both sides of the ball that are getting offers from the top schools in the country. On offense Rodney Grant III returns in the backfield, Max Bucannon, Jayshawn Woods and Jadon Blake anchor the line and Kenyon Holden and Frank Hicks are ready to step up at receiver. We added one of the top '26 QBs in the nation in Mike Clayton RBs Khamani Robinson and Amari Major plus Devin Voltaire at receiver. Our offense is loaded and will be ready to put on a show.”

What team do you feel will be the toughest competition on your schedule?

“We open up against Jones High School in Camping World Stadium. Two of the best programs in Central Florida going at each other in the kickoff classic will be electric. We travel to Lake Wales and of course Lake Mary is a district game that is always circled on the calendar.”

Who is the toughest individual player your team will face off against?

“We consistently play against some of the best players in the state week in and week out. But honestly the dudes we line up against in practice every day are the best of the best. Its a blessing to battle with top recruits Ethan Pritchard, Juan Berchal and the younger guys like Rasheem Turner, David Coleman and Jalin Chaplin. They help our offense prepare. If we can move the ball against those guys, we feel like we can play with anybody.”

Do you want to play sports in college? If so, which one?

“I will be playing D1 football in college. The only question is what position? I can play anywhere on offense and special teams and have been getting a number of schools asking about defense too. Finding the right fit and the program where I can be challenged and grow both physically and mentally is key.”

What colleges have been recruiting you?

“Dartmouth, Duke, Liberty, Middle Tennessee State, Navy, NC State, North Dakota State University and South Florida have all shown significant interest. Columbia, Southern Illinois, New Hampshire and Yale have reached out in the last few weeks. Eastern Michigan, Marshall, Tulane and UNLV came by earlier this year and are planning to come by this spring.”

What school is recruiting you the hardest?

“Liberty was the first to offer and has remained in contact. I visited for Junior Day and was truly impressed by everything they have to offer.”

Have you made any college trips yet?

“I've been to about 20 schools over the past 2 years. Most recently the Naval Academy, NC State and Liberty. I'm fortunate to have visited everything from the biggest SEC schools to multiple Ivys to some schools that have a smaller enrollment than Seminole's 4,600 students.”

Do you have plans for any trips soon?

“I'm planning to get back to NC State and Navy in June. Last spring we had more than 40 schools come through to watch practice. I will wait to see what offers are made available before I decide on any other visits this summer.”

Did you have a favorite college growing up?

“Florida State.”

Spring Games and Jamborees

The majority start this week and last through next week. I prefer jamborees because each team plays at least two teams leading to better efforts by each team. It is also more enjoyable to see how teams match up to more than one opponent.

I’m planning to make it to at least two games, one inter squad game and possibly one jamboree. I will stay local to watch Durant’s inter squad and drive to Bradenton for Ocala Vanguard @ Manatee this week. Next week there are quite a few games to choose from. That Friday night I am tempted to make it to Bishop Verot who is hosting Miami Columbus and Sarasota Riverview.

Manatee Football

Looks like the 4X100 team took 1st at region, all of which are football players. So including alternates that's 6 skilled players Im not expecting to participate with spring football as I the spring game is the 16th and state track meet is the 18th. Manatee has some huge holes to fill on its OL, as the only returning starter was a soph last season who was largely ineffective last season and was eventually replaced by moving a defensive starter to his position. A number of large number of JV players will be moving up, but I found them while possessing good size, to be slow as well as not displaying much in the way of over-all strength. Manatee will have a 3 year starter at the QB position, a nice mix of talent at the WR position (but the speed guys I'm not anticipating playing, due to the state track meet). Same for the RB position as the top 2 players are on that 4X100 team, but a freshman that was lighting on the JV team last season, should find plenty of opportunity to show what he can do.

On defense Manatee returns 2 3-year staters on the DL, and promising young man moving up from the JV at the nose guard position. Manatee had 2 transfers that Im expecting will play at the LB position, both missed large portions of their seasons last year due to injuries. LB play was a area of major weakness for Manatee last year. DB position should be a position of strength for Manatee, with a number of returning starters or players that saw significant playin time last season

Q&A with Port Charlotte quarterback Logan Flaherty

How did the high school football season go overall?
“The season did not go exactly as planned as I got hurt in the first game of the year and was out for 6 weeks. I came back and ended up leading my team to a 4-3 record as the starter while winning our district and making the playoffs. I ended up throwing for close to 600 yards and 5 touchdowns numbers that aren’t bad coming off an injury all and all wasn’t a bad season still got a lot to work on.”

What are your plans now with sports and workouts?
“As of now I’m throwing three to four days a week after school as well as lifting 4 days a week and doing a speed workout every Friday.”

How do you feel your team will do next football season?
“I have transferred to Port Charlotte high school from Charlotte high school and they are coming off a good season so I think we should be able to follow that up with another strong season with a deep run into playoffs.”

What team do you feel will be the toughest competition on your schedule?
“I don’t think I could give an overall toughest team but our focus is on teams in our district. Off the top of my head some of the other tough teams would be Venice, FBA and Zephrhills.”

Growing up playing baseball then transitioning more into football I would be blessed to be able to play either sport in college but if I had to decide I would lean more towards the football side.”

What colleges have been recruiting you?
“I’ve talked to Coach Hinshaw at UCF but besides that no other colleges have reached out yet but just staying patient and waiting for my time.”
