Cardinal Mooney, Wow!

After last year’s Kickoff Classic at Bishop Verot, I came away stating that STA was a very complete team. I know it’s just a spring jamboree but I have witnessed another complete team. You can guess by the title of this thread it is Cardinal Mooney. After watching them play Thursday night they remind you of a top tier Jesuit team.

This was the Clearwater High Jamboree played last Thursday that included Mitchell (Pasco) and of course Clearwater. Mooney easily dismantled both teams scoring 4-5 TD’s in each contest. Clearwater was the usual Clearwater. Loaded with talent, maybe more than usual, especially on defense, but that did not phase Mooney. Mitchell is very young this year. Eventual state champ, West Boca Raton, knocked Mitchell out of the playoffs last year. It doesn’t help that that 3 of their top returning skill players did not play. The top RB and top receiver transferred to Clearwater Central Catholic and their other fine WR is recovering from an injury. Clearwater defeated Mitchell in the final half played.

Cardinal Mooney travels to STA for this year’s kickoff classic. I’m not ready to put them in STA’s echelon buy they are currently knocking on the door.

On Friday I was going to support my local team, the Auburndale Bloodhounds. They were scheduled to host Ft. Meade. I get to the Auburndale campus. Nobody was there. Looked at GoFan and it said the Bloodhounds were playing at Bartow so I drove to Bartow. I arrive there and the same thing, no game being played there tonight. I double checked GoFan. The date, time and location was all there. Friday, May 23rd 7pm at Bartow High School. My plan of seeing 16 teams in 9 days came crashing down to 14. So I sighed and drove home.

Q&A with St. Augustine running back Trendell Anderson

What have you been doing as of late with off-season workouts?
“Training in the weight [room], trying to get bigger and working on the field doing agility and fatigue.”

What do you feel you have improved on most since last football season?
“Exploding quicker when coming out of my routes.”

How do you feel your team will do next football season?
“We will be very good, as long as we stick to the plan and maximize every opportunity we get, we will be good.”

What team do you feel will be the toughest competition on your schedule?
“Bolles, but we’re going to be more than ready to play them.”

Who is the toughest individual player your team will face off against?
“Really no one, we have special players that aren’t scared to back down from anyone so when playing us, teams will have to bring their A game or it’s going to get very bad for them.”

Do you want to play sports in college? If so, which one?
“In college I want to play football.”

What colleges have been recruiting you?
“BCU, Brown, Furman, Western Illinois.”

What school is recruiting you the hardest?
“BCU.”

Have you made any college trips yet?
“No, not yet.”

Do you have plans for more trips soon?
“Yes, in the summer it will be visiting many different colleges.”

What camps are you planning to do this summer?
“BCU, Mercer, UWG, Brown, Western Illinois.”

Did you have a favorite college growing up?
“Growing up I was a huge LSU fan, I just loved their school and football team . I loved watching Leonard Fournette.

Springtime Thoughts (14 teams in 8 days)

On Gatorman’s thread about the Ft Myers Jamboree I concur with his synopsis. I’ll add a few points.
* Ft Myers WR Fred Jackson is a star in the making. He will probably be QB Andrezzone’s favorite target. Jackson has very good speed and will be a difficult cover. He looks to have nice hands but what I liked the most is he knows what to do once he catches the ball.
* First time I’ve been to Edison Stadium since the turf was installed. Love the midfield graphic of Sam Siriani Field.
* I’ve told been told the Green Wave has 10 transfers coming in. I hope a couple of them are big OL with mean streaks.

Port Charlotte
* Very impressive. Hard to find a weakness.
* DL is much smaller than last but they are replacing 2 very large human beings.
* This program must find the way to beat tougher teams in the playoffs. Won’t know just how good a team this is until they do.

Lake Wales
*Typical Lake Wales team with plenty of good athletes all over the field.
* The success of this team will depend on whether QB Chad Williams will finally put it all together. He has it all as an athlete to be better than average . Believe it or not I seen Williams play 3 times in one year for 3 different teams. Auburndale in their spring game last year, Lakeland in the regular season and playoffs last year and Lake Wales Friday night.

I really enjoy attending games with the Gatorman. The only problem is get into conversations mostly about football and sometimes forget to watch the game.

FLORIDA COACHES COALITION working for better coaching pay

Saw a story on WTVT, Channel 13 Tampa, about the Florida Coaches Coalition that will address the state government of the importance of making coaches pay competitive to other states and at least fair to the hours and work they give to high school athletes in the state. The following is a statement page by the Coalition on their website.

Q&A with Charlotte defensive end Trenton Curliss

What have you been doing as of late with off-season workouts?
“During the offseason I have been doing a lot of bag work just working on my moves and getting better with my hands. I also have spent a lot of time in the weightroom getting stronger to go against big offensive lineman.”

What do you feel you have improved on most since last football season?
“I feel like I have improved most on my hands and being physical off the line instead of letting the O-line dictate what I do.”

How do you feel your team will do next football season?
“I am really excited for my team and senior year, we just came off a big spring game win 42-0 vs Barron Collier and we have a lot of talent. We are looking to shock a lot of people and make a big playoff run.”

What team do you feel will be the toughest competition on your schedule?
“I think Cape Coral will be one of our toughest, we lost to them last year on the week of the hurricane in a battle and they ended up winning the district championship but they have a good squad but so do we and I think that will be a great game for us.”

Who is the toughest individual player your team will face off against?
“I don’t think there is one Individual who will be of great competition for our team but for me I will give credit to the tackle from Fort Myers, he has really good size and is good at what he does and it is a battle every time I line up with him.”

“Yes I have been to FAU a couple times along with FIU and a couple of weeks ago I made a trip up to New York to visit Army, I also have been to USF a multitude of times.”

Do you have plans for more trips soon?
“I’m not sure, I have been in contact with a couple of people but I don’t have any trips set up right now but I have some visits in the works.”

What camps are you planning to do this summer?
“I know I will be at a USF 7v7 camp with my team this summer but I’m not all sure what individual camps I will attend but there are a couple I have been looking at.”

Did you have a favorite college growing up?
“My father grew up in Ohio so when I was born I was dressed in Ohio State gear before I was 1 year old, so I have been an Ohio State fan my whole life, I grew up watching them every Saturday knowing every single player. I have been there a couple times as a kid as well and toured their facilities.”

First Academy Coach Will Be Punished

The FHSSA are suspending Head Coach for providing benefits to players that weren’t enrolled at the school when they were provided. Head Coach Jeff Conaway will include a penalty that is similar to Michigan’s Jim Harbaugh when the Wolverine’s were found violating spying rules on other teams. Conaway will be suspended for a year will be allowed to perform all his duties except he will not be allowed to coach at the games. First Academy will have to pay $36,000 in fines. The following are articles further about the violations and penalties.

Q&A with Bishop Moore defensive back Trenton Gummer

What do you feel you have improved on most since last football season?
“Really worked hard on my technique and understanding of the game as a nickel/slot defender. Also got much stronger in the weightroom.”

How do you feel your team will do next football season?
“Coming off of back-to-back seasons with 10+ wins and advancing to the 3rd round of the playoffs, expectations are high. But we are young on the OL/DL and graduated 18+ seniors. Do really working hard on developing our young players.”
