5A Playoffs

The interesting thing is if they are going to pair teams by seedings in the semifinals. Which means Region 1 winner will not play Region 2 winner and the same for Region 3 vs Region 4.

The FHSAA states in 4.7.2.2.2 State Semifinals
(a) Dates and Times. See the football webpage at FHSAA.com
(b) Bracketing. Teams will be seeded based on the FHSAA/MaxPreps ranking at conclusion of the regular season.
The one (1) seed will play the four (4) seed and the two (2) seed will play the three (3) seed.
(c) Host Schools. Teams with highest regular season FHSAA/Maxpreps ranking will be designated "Home" team.

So, with that stated not sure if that's correct? According to the brackets it still Regions 1 vs 2 and 3 vs 4 in semifinals.

Fans that are not too happy

All over social media fans of the Astronaut High War Eagles in Titusville have been expressing their angst about being left out of the playoffs. Astronaut beat The Villages Charter High Thursday night 21-20 to win the 2A District 6 title. Astronaut finished with a record of 6-4 while The Villages Charter finished at 5-4 as runner up in the district. Fans of the War Eagles found out Friday evening they had been left out while the team they just defeated made it. The Villages Charter finished with a higher FHSAA point ranking than Astronaut. The following is an article with other schools are feeling snubbed.

For the record the Laz Index had The Villages Charter ranked higher than Astronaut. Better start scheduling tougher opponents.

2 Games in 2 Days

Thursday night attended the Wiregrass Ranch at Mitchell for the 6A District 2 title. Both teams were undefeated. Neither team had played a tough schedule so these 2 teams were on a collision course to determine the top team in Pasco County. A county that still lags behind other counties in producing top teams while the population continues to grow.

Wiregrass Ranch is the most talented team with 4 players in the Florida top 200. CB/WR Graceson Littleton is #11 who hasn’t chosen a college year, CB/WR Bryce Randolph is committed to Liberty University. RB Nathan McNeil is committed to Iowa. OL/DL Gavin Blanchard is committed to Clemson. Mitchell has no one on this list.

Who won? Mitchell 31-14. How did this happen. Mitchell’s players give 100% on every play. Their offense is imaginative enough to keep defenses on their toes. How did Wiregrass lose? Approximately 200 yards penalties plus multiple mistakes.

Friday night attended a SSAA 2nd round playoff game. Christ’s Church Academy from Jacksonville at The Master’s Academy in Oviedo. TMA has something in common with Boise State. It is blue turf. Master's won 40-29. The game went back and forth until CC wilted in the 4th due to a small roster. Both teams had talent at the skill positions. Both QB's throw accurate derp balls. Both teams have productive RB's and WR's. CC's RB Harry Wilson rush for around 200 yards. The game was a lot of fun to watch.

Manatee overall #2 behind Lakeland in 5A

Manatee will host Pinellas Park this Friday in the first round of the 5A playoffs. Manatee has earned the #2 overall seed in 5A, meaning they will be at home throughout the playoffs as long as they win.
Also, this year for the first time the teams will play each other according to seedings in the semifinals. North and south regions won’t play each other in the semifinals for a trip to the finals. Good news for Canes fans is Manatee want see St Thomas Aquinas until the finals if they both make it that far. Let it all begin this Friday. Go Canes!

Youth Football, High School Football, and the disconnect.

That's why I wouldn't let my first two play youth football; I didn't want them to get bad habits. It's just a fact that a lot of guys out there being supportive good dads who don't necessarily know how to coach. You have a portion of others are living vicariously through their kids, and they may have unrealistic expectations. Occasionally you get a really good staff. As big as youth leagues are, you'd think they'd supply some kind of mandatory training.

My youngest, a pretty good basketball player, was recruited to play WR, and they asked me to coach OL. They promised they had a legit shot at a National Title, but needed some hands. And, little Punta Gorda, Pop 17,000 did in fact win a NC that year, beating teams from the 2nd and 4th largest cities in America, Chicago and Houston . But there were two other guys with college experience, and this staff was with the rest from the beginning.

One of our players is now the Tarpon HC. All three of my boys had pretty good high school careers; two were offered scholarships, and one of them went and played in the NAIA.

Sarasota High School Football has potential

I watched the Sarasota vs Riverview game yesterday and Sarasota has a lot of potential. They have a very young team that can make some noise in a couple years if they can stay together which may be the most difficult part. The were coached up well and simply lacked the players needed to compete. I was surprised because I didn't think they would show or have any potential. Hopefully, Coach Campbell will stay and complete the process.

Youth Football, High School Football, and the disconnect.

Currently, there seems to be a disconnect between youth football coaches and high school football coaches. I say this because I feel high school coaches should put on clinics for youth football coaches to help them with enhancing their coaching knowledge whether it be drills, blocking, scheme, etc. I understand high school coaches are over worked and under paid, but this would pay dividends when that player makes it to high school. These youth football coaches have no practice structure, no drills, nothing. They just run plays on air for 2 hours, with water breaks built in and wind sprints when its over. The lineman get zero coach and are told to block. I think the high school coaching community needs to step up and provide clinics to assist with this issue.

FHSAA putting the hammer down.

I think Palmetto is benefitting from playing a very soft schedule which seems to be something that Riverview should have done. Cardinal Mooney has turned into a powerhouse compared to what they traditionally were. Mooney's Head Coach seems to be selling the program very well, getting the right coaches, and scheduling a competitive schedule. As long as the transfer rules stay how they are, they will continue to prosper. Money talks.

New College of Florida Athletics

So its been years since Ive lived in the Sarasota/Bradenton area. When traveling to Manatee HS football games from Punta Gorda, mine line of travel is to take the University Parkway exit, to US 41.....which obviously takes me right by New College on my way north to Bradenton. My question is this: Beyond the FSU Circus School sign Ive noted.....(I promise Mark to not make any jokes about FSU being a Circus School, no more than I never teased my UGA friends about the Butts (S)mear building at UGA......one day I'll have to tell you about a story that was told to me about a former UGA player who's name was "Happy Dicks" and a headline that appeared once in the Athens Banner Herald, that apparently slipped past editors before it went to print) anywho...........My impression was that New College had been absorbed by FSU or perhaps USF, and while the campus is still known as New College....it was no longer a private liberal arts school????? So just wondering what exactly is the story there now?
And I always heard through the 80s and 90s the regents from the big schools didn't want Jr College or lower division ball to compete with gate, however small it might be.

New College got a new president in October 2023. They are now a public honors college with increasing enrollment and more sports.

New College of Florida Athletics

What prompted me bring this up was a conversation I had with a parent of a player that currently plays on the basketball team at New College. He stated that New College wants to be a competitve NAIA sports school and adding certain sports will help boost the enrollement which was a major issue. As the school adds sports, the landscape of the school is becoming less artsy/hippie.

New College of Florida Athletics

As a former NAIA player, I think that's a grand idea - so many kids can play on at that level, who have no other shot, particularly with NIL. I arrived in Dodge City in 1972 with the first group of Florida kids. Guys from Cardinal Newman, St Thomas (Catholic College), and Tarpon Springs. There were like five of us who started as Freshman. That started a pipeline for a host of other Tarpons, guys from Tampa Catholic and Glades Central too and we won two KCAC Titles.

My old boss, Tom Monaghan ended up developing the Ave Maria community and opened Ave Maria college. I had to really lobby him to use the yacht on this coast rather than Miami -Palm Beach. I got him to Naples Yacht Club for New Years Eve 1985. Entertained his guests and incentive store managers at resorts from South Seas Plantation to Long Boat Key Club.

He eventually fell in love with Naples and the rest is history. Ave Maria's current President is the brother of the TE I played next to for 3 years at St Mary of The Plains in Dodge City. They began a football program and started playing in the NAIA. We've had a few kids go there.

The biggest problem for smaller Florida schools is probably travel expense. I heard recently that Monaghan had them schedule a game in his home state of Michigan.
