CCC 31 TAMPA CATHOLIC 7

The Clearwater Central Catholic Mauraders outclassed the Tampa Catholic(TC) Crusaders at the victor’s home field with an almost packed house. Tampa Catholic’s most impressive moment occurred during the captains’ meeting for the coin toss. The Crusaders sent out 4 of their largest lineman with their helmets on in an apparent attempt to intimidate. They dwarfed the 2 CCC captains.

Once the game started it was obvious the plan did not work as the Mauraders defense stymied TC’s offense time after time. TC ‘s WR TJ Moore caught a beautiful TD pass that was nullified by a holding penalty. Moore is 6’3” Clemson commit. He is smooth as silk and appears to be legit. Unfortunately, TC’s ATH Jameer Grimsley, an Alabama commit, was injured so he did not play.

The real story of the night was CCC’s domination. They took it to the Crusaders all game in all phases of the game. The Mauraders junior QB Jershaun Newton ran and passed impressively. In my opinion the major difference was CCC’s coaches had their team ready to play and TC played with markedly less energy.

This was a 3M Region 3 clash of evenly ranked opponents. The result of the game says otherwise.

Manatee 27 Sarasota 14 FINAL

Fighting a cold presently, so decided not to make the trip to Bradenton last night and instead watch the game online while listening to the guys on radio call the game. Going into the game I was expecting Manatee to win, in part due to the way Sarasota had lost its kick-off classic and then lost to Fort Meade last week. I hear the stuff about the limited practice time, due to the Hurricane this past week to explain Manatee's flat performance last night.

.So before I comment on the game last night, wanted to add some context. After the game I went back and watched the Sarasota versus Fort Meade game. I also kept tabs on the Lake Minneola game versus Vanguard, during the Manatee/Sarasota game last night.

Vanguard won the game 33-21, and the game took on a story similar to what I watched last week against Manatee. Vanguard jumped out to a 21-7 lead, only to watch Lake Minneola come back to tie the game 21-21 at half. 2nd half Vanguard scored to open up a 28-21 lead, and from there it was more less a battle of field possession, with Vanguard scoring its last TD on a long pass play near the end of the game to make it 33-21.

Sarasota against Fort Mede was a game of 2 similar teams with similar styles and personnel. The exception to that was Fort Meade was able to put points on the board, while Sarasota seemed to find ways to not be able to do the same. It was the kind of game where if the two teams were to play again I could see a result with a different out come. Will add this tid bit about that game, the Fort Meade junior RB, ran for over 200 yards against Sarasota on just 20 carries and its other Junior RB had 70 yards rushing on 10 carries. That's a average of 9 yards per carry. Sarasota's RB Ziegler had 120 rushing on 20 carries against Fort Meade.

Against Manatee I fairly certain Zeigler had well over 100 yards rushing, Sarasota's inability to put together any kind of consistent passing attacked together, pretty much doomed them offensively against Manatee. What Sarasota was able to do however was run consistently against perhaps Manatee's biggest asset on defense....its DL. I'm beginning to feel however, Manatee DB play is going to be Manatee's biggest asset this season! I find the Manatee DL, having watched 3 games, being undisciplined and instead tend to rely more on its superior over-all talent. I also still feel its LB play particularly at MLB is weak.

On offense Manatee is blessed with elite speed and talent at all skilled positions. Its OL is young and is still working to come together. The OL has its good moments and then its not so good moments. Liking the TE play more and more, just 3 games into the season, but I believe this young man is going to be a better TE over-all then TE Manatee had last season! The Manatee QB is a tuff mother.....he's taken some big hits in each of Manatee's 1st 3 games, that makes me question whether he'll be able to do that all season? Manatee presently does not have a true backup QB. The Manatee QB is probably the best over-all QB Manatee has had since Cord Sandberg, in that he has a above average arm as well as being an above average athlete. Not saying he is as good, but he does have the potential to be really good eventually!

Was frustrating to watch Manatee struggle offensively much of the night, its assemble the kind of talent that could make them really really good......they are however not close to achieving that....yet.

If Manatee and Sarasota were to meet again later this season, and Manatee hasn't progressed in a positive manner in the areas of concern I've mentioned.......I could see the game ending with a different outcome in as far as a final score.

Cocoa 22 Jones 20

Ventured to Orlando to see one of this weekend’s marquee matchups with frequent state finalist Cocoa @ Jones. A lot of history at Jones. It was established in 1886.

It was a tale of 2 half’s. Cocoa dominated the first half taking a 19-7 lead into halftime. Both teams started sophomores QB’s. Cocoas’s Brady Hart is approximately 6’4” with a good arm. He moves well. If he adds muscle and progresses there is no reason he won’t be one the top QB’s in the state before he finishes his career.

Cocoa came out flat after halftime. Jones took advantage of it but failed on a 2 punt conversion that would have tied the score at 22 each. Cocoa stopped Jones on downs with just under 2 minutes to get the W..

It was a muggy night with plenty of players cramping. A lot of first game mistakes but both teams played well. Would not be surprised at all to see Cocoa get back to the state final. Jones looks to do some damage in the playoffs. I know, it was the first game but I saw enough to believe this.

Manatee 23 IMG White 17 Kickoff Classic Final

There was nothing really flashy about IMG White, they were a typical Blue Collar bunch. Manatee did just enough to stay close, and then on its final as well as winning score, Got one of its speedy WR open in space.........couple of nice moves and it was all over as the WR left everyone in his dust for a game winning TD. I believe I understand why everyone wants Jaquez to remain its head coach, but I'm going to state it as plainly as I can once again...........he sucks as OC and play caller. He needs to drop the experiment of Pinder at LB and let him be his primary RB........Pinder is head and shoulders better then anyone else Manatee can put at RB! Manatee needs to take a close look at it middle linebacker play, in order for its defense to be somewhat effective it needs a enforcer at the middle linebacker position. Tonight's game was a game where the MLB was basically man handled by the IMG OL almost the entire game. I suggested to the guys that were sitting around me, that Ean Johnson-Kelley #55 has the speed, physicality and the right mentality for the position..........presently Manatee plays him at DE. I remember a few year back when Manatee played STA, STA had Dallas Turner and Tyreak Sapp on defense. The entire game both these guys were lining up all over the field and were total disruptors the entire game. Ean Johnson-Kelley is this type of player, playing him exclusively on the DL is short changing your defense......my opinion. I liked the blocking on the whole by the Manatee WR group! Wasn't a pretty game for Manatee, there also must have been 8 - 10 stoppage of play due to Manatee players cramping up
