What amounted to 1st half shower of yellow flags at Hawkins Stadium, basically allowed every Vero Beach Drive to stay alive when Manatee would have otherwise stopped Vero and forced the punt. Manatee went into half down 21-19 and then came out the second half to outscore Vero Beach 28-7. Johnnie lang put together another 200 yard game on the ground scoring 5 TD's and Octavious James added over 160 for Manatee on the ground as well. Manatee heads to Orlando to take on Dr Phillips HS

Re: Bradenton Herald give Manatee HS Football its kiss of death

Dude...don't even...

I'll chose to go with Manatee's 34-3 all-time home playoff record and use that as my guidance. My pregame Shake Pit meal ritual will overcome any Karma they could put down so it's all good.

Gatorman, I've seen that happen elsewhere too. They always wait till right before a huge game because they've run out of writing about the glory boys all year. Again teams like Manatee and Venice can always trot out the skill players; when they have the great lines are the year's they're special.

Re: Bradenton Herald give Manatee HS Football its kiss of death

Silver. Never heard Venice and great athletes. They usually have 1 or 2 a year but not like charlotte

Re: Bradenton Herald give Manatee HS Football its kiss of death

Gatorman, I've seen you Manatee guys post about the current QB there, but he's a senior, so what does that position look like for the next couple of years for the varsity team?

Re: Bradenton Herald give Manatee HS Football its kiss of death

yes I would like to hear who gatorman thinks is going to be Manatee's qb next year

Re: Bradenton Herald give Manatee HS Football its kiss of death

I think Colagiovanni has potential to replace Drummonds. He showed flashes early. Beyond that, I have no idea what is in the pipeline at Manatee. Hopefully Manatee can extend its playoff run and get a couple extra weeks of practice in. Between the extra weeks of the playoffs and spring/summer, Manatee should be able to come up with a suitable QB to compliment Johnnie Lang and the sure to be dominant running game next year. Manatee will be very strong next year all the way around.

Re: Bradenton Herald give Manatee HS Football its kiss of death

They have a 9th grader who will probably win the job when it is all said and done. He was on the JV team but was up with the varsity for individual period. They like his arm and athleticism.

Re: Bradenton Herald give Manatee HS Football its kiss of death

Sarasota JV put a whuppin on the Manatee JV 28-7, Manatee's 1st JV loss in 3 years too I believe

Just curious how long it will take for that Sarasota JV to have a visit, ooops, I mean transfer to Manatee...

Congrats to Sarasota JV on going undefeated this year, but what do you expect from a team that had 13 juniors on the JV team. Smh! That makes absolutely no sense. Those guys should have been playing varsity but I guess going undefeated on JV is more important. Manatee needs to get some of those IMG guys. Either way, Manatee will be very successful for years to come.

Gatorman, what kind of fouls were called and being committed in the game Friday Night?

I wasn't at the game just watching the live stream, so its entirely possible I wasn't seeing everything. Timing of the penalties was to me the bigger issue, as each was called when Vero would have to turned the ball over on downs or punt. several were of the personal fouls variety, I remember one for an apparent horse collar when it appeared the Manatee defender had nothing but jersey in his hand. Face mask call on Manatee during QB sack that would had put Vero in a 4th and plus 10 yards when the face mask appear unintentional (if it happen at all, I didn't see it) as the QB ducked his head as the 2 Manatee defensive players brought him down Pass interference calls, hit out of bounds all Jambun 82 were the type of calls that were really up to the eye of the beholder as I said all timing wise allowed Vero to keep drives alive, to say nothing of actual number of calls against the Manatee defense in the 1st half also...

Last week the offense had so many calls that killed drives or took away apparent TD's or 1st downs..........was more my way of trying to give an idea about how the game went for Manatee during the 1st half of the game against Vero than anything else.

Go Canes Go!

FL941, just about every JV team has juniors playing, couple of years ago I went to a Braden River/Southeast JV game and it was very apparent Braden River had more than a few Juniors playing. I know Manatee also has juniors on it JV team, and usually has more to do with the Junior getting game reps than anything else......If you remember Manatee JV team opened up against a varsity private school team this year, which they won. Bottom line I believe the Manatee staff would probably tell you they embrace the challenge............make for better players and team long term.

Go Canes Go!

I was at the game and Gatorman has it pretty well there. No way the sack was a facemask and the timing and amount of the calls were suspect. On a punt the Vero player signaled for a fair catch, then tried to advance it. Isn't that a penalty? None called.

There was also a facemask that a Vero player did on a Manatee player. Every last person in the stands on both sides saw it but no flag was thrown.

Forgot about the Vero Beach fair catch (non-call) and that one was also rather blatant........I know its no win for the officials typically.............this game it was just the timing of the calls............the debate on the legitimacy of the calls, and then finally just the absurd number of calls the 1st half against Manatee that offers so much fertile ground for after game discussion.

Thank you Flhsfootballfan, Manatee Magic, and Gatorman001, for answering my question unlike other posters to this message board. Yes, advancing the ball after making a valid or invalid fair catch signal is a 5-yard delay of game penalty. It sounds that there were several calls that could have gone either way from what has been described. The goal of any official is to give both teams a fair, safe game and hopefully that was the case in this game even though there might have been some disagreements about some of the penalties called or not called.

I've seen a lot of bad officiating this season JB, some really well called games too. I've also seen a lot of officials who look like they're new to their crews this season that I haven't seen before. I can;t believe my youngest has been telling me he'd like to maybe start officiating

Anyway, I've been around the game long enough to know what a bad call is, that people are human, they'll make mistakes and it usually evens out, and whether people want to believe it or not, it is part of the game. Refs, like players make mistakes.

At the playoff game the other night, me and most of our side of the field saw a block in the back in front of our bench with a ref trailing ten yards behind and looking right at it (not sure how he could not have seen it unless his eyes were closed). No call. I remember a carbon copy of that play in a State Semi-final game up at Quincy in 1970 that I was trailing, that the ref double clutched, but threw the flag - that flag cost me and my team our school's only chance at playing in a State Title game, but it was the right call.

Now a series later in the playoff gane the other night, one of our backs rises up ot of his stance and starts rolling his arms trying not to lose his balance and fall foward before the snap count - ball is snapped we throw a 50-yard completion. No call. We all agreed on our sideline we should have been flagged for motion. So there it is, evened out.

It's a wonder how we ever get anyone who even wants to be a referee. They're booed immediately on half their calls whether they're right or wrong. There is no challenge flag and there's no going under the hood. They're expected to get it right on every live play.

It would never cross my mind to harass a ref after the game nor should anyone but I've often wondered how nervous they are at some games getting out safely. I hope they are escorted, these days there are some nutty people running around that take things way too seriously.

I think in the majority of cases the refs are doing their best but over the years I've seen a few situations that made me think otherwise. The obviously horrible call at Good Council comes to mind. How does Manatee start on the 25 in overtime and with the ball directly on the 15 not have a first down or even a measurement. I believe that game deciding call is available on You Tube.

Thanks for putting in the time and effort Jambun82 on a difficult job. If you ref a Manatee game and I yell at you from the stands about a call, don't take it personally.

Heard some good ones over the years. Hey ref, check your voicemail you missed a call.

Thank you Flhsfootballfan, but I don't think that you will have to worry about me officiating a Manatee game anytime soon. I don't live anywhere near Bradenton! Great point Manatee Magic, very well said. Silver King, I think that it would terrific if your son became an official, and perhaps you could encourage him if you wanted too. becoming an official is a great way to stay involved with the sport or any sport that a person played and enjoyed growing up.

Dang it man. DON'T transfer anywhere. Make us and everyone else have to try and earn a win against the Sailors.

No problem Silver King. I think that you son will become a very good official with your support and guidance, and I wish him all the best. I always felt that you were one of the most level-headed, knowledgeable, and reasonable posters in this message board, which are traits that officials need to become competent. I also think that you having played college football gives you unique and different insights on the game that many of us who didn't play at that level probably don't possess. I would wager that your son shares these insights with you, and it will only help him.

Have to agree with jambun82's comments on Silver King. Class act to say the least. I don't see him complaining about the bad call the ref's made Friday against his Tarps. The winning touchdown call was wrong. Our receiver never had possession. Check it out, jambun82. WAVE OUT!

Thanks JB. Wavebb, I think if it wasn't that play, you guys would have just gone the other side on the next throw, we had no answer at that point...You guys out played us the 4th quarter, plain and simple. That was very similar to the first game; we played with you the first half, 2nd half your athletes made their presence known - and that Q is one of the better Qs I've seen in the area in a long time.

Thing I loved about the game is the Tarpon players were rubbing Mojo the Tarpon during the game between drives or stops. After the game, loved seeing your guys go over and fist bump Coach Sam's statue - steeped in tradition, that's why we respect Ft Myers so much. All three of my boys were there, and there teams had that great run against Ft Myers, but they were saying the same thing.
