Going to Planet Cocoa tonight

What is Planet Cocoa? It’s what people are calling the highly successful Cocoa Tigers football team because they are playing at a different level than all their opponents. They do have one blemish on this year’s record when they visited IMG.

The Miami Norland Vikings are traveling almost 200 miles up I-95 to play the the 2A #1 Tigers tonight. Norland is the 4A #2 ranked team. Their only loss was to Chaminade Madonna.

We’re talking some of the cream of the crop in the state of Florida. Both teams are loaded with D1 talent.

I took in two games last week. First saw the Apopka Blue Darters @ West Orange Warriors. Apopka took it on the chin with West Orange taking advantage of Apopka’s mistakes with long play TD’s. The Blue Darters are more than likely going to miss the playoffs for the first time since 1999. Quite a run by a well run program. The whole Apopka program is a joy to watch with the fans, the band, the cheerleaders, etc. support the team before, during and after the game. If you want to see a great example of how it should be done go see Apopka play.

Because of the storm postponements I traveled down the road to Haines City to see them play the Winter Haven Blue Devils. Haines City’s quick, fast skill players got loose enough to win. One name to remember is John Kostuch. He is Winter Haven’s QB. He was the best athlete on the field. Very fast with exceptional cutting ability. Could easily see him playing receiver or DB in college. Probably going under the radar as a recruit.

Did not know CBS owned Maxpreps

Went this evening to check on some teams, and instead found this: (Will be intersting to see how Maxpreps responds)

SHUTDOWN NOTICE: As many fans of our site know, we are contracted to provide data (national schedules/scores/ratings/projections/league+division alignments) to MaxPreps. Recently, for the eighth time since aquiring MaxPreps in 2007, CBS went back into breach and is willfully refusing for some unknown reason to act in a legal fashion and honor their legal/contractual obligations in terms of paying money owed to calpreps. We are out of funds at this point and have been forced to cease operations.

As you'd expect, we are in the process of suing CBS to recover owed monies plus damages, but that will no doubt not be resolved until many months or years after the conclusion of the 2024 playoffs, so we encourage any section/state associations who were relying on our ratings in order to run your playoffs this season to apply any pressure you may have the pull to apply to the rogue CBS accounting department, to attempt to presuade them to finally start to act in accordance with federal contract law. Thank you and we're sorry it's come to this, but frankly it was destined to never work with a company owned by CBS. We hope to partner with a non-CBS owned company in future seasons, but it's presumably not reasonable to expect that a deal could be struck with another company during the 2024 season, but if you are such a company and have interest, are ears are certainly open.

Mulberry @ Hardee

I left at half time because I didn't care to listen to Mulberry's Assistant upstairs yelling out the FBOMBS through the Microphone to the Mulberry Coaches on the sideline. Every single parent on Hardee' side heard him and one walked up top and told him to stop it.

He was clearly violating FHSAA policy on use of profanity during the game. Polk County Superintendent and Lakeland Ledger will be receiving an email with his photo about this. Any Coach that has to yell out FBombs like that doesn't need to be a Coach. If Mulberry's AD doesn't do anything some ppl may just take this to FHSAA with witness statements!!

Hardee lost they don't have a passing game, literally nothing. They have the receivers but don't have the arm to get them the ball. I will always be honest, not going to sugar coat it. You lose fans and future players this way, just being honest. They may get 2-3 wins this year IDK.

See you all maybe in a couple of years, if we are around by then! Thought I would give it a try again but I just don't care for the game like I use to. It's not like it use to be, fun.

God Bless..

Booker loses to Sarasota Riverview. Coaching vs. Talent.

Booker lost to their cross-town rival Sarasota Riverview. Booker played a VERY sloppy game. They had countless penalties, gave up an onside kick, 2 lost fumbles in which one of the lost fumbles was returned for a touchdown. Booker also had a hard time stopping the run. Riverview would not have been able to pass the ball consistently or effectively against the stellar secondary of Booker and had to depend on the run game. On paper, this game should not have been close at all. Unfortunately, Booker was severely outcoached and undisciplined. Riverview lost to Berkley Prep 35-7. Carrollwood Day beat Tampa Berkley, and Booker put 70 points on Carrollwood Day. I hope Booker can get it together before playoffs because they have a stacked team that could really make a deep playoff run.

Okay Miami fans, honest thoughts?

My take: Tech WR had the ball in the endzone, Miami DB clearly out of bounds pulled the ball away from Tech WR. Had the Miami DB not pulled the ball away, Tech WR retains possession and it should have been ruled a Tech TD(because Miami DB is no longer a eligible player once he was out of bounds).

Takes a play like that here and there to win a National Championship, might just be Miami's year!

Fort Myers 30 North Fort Myers 33 & other games

I know nothing about the game really, other than the final score. Had my eye on Fort Myers as they appear to be the only school in region 3 I believe, has any kind of chance to challenge Manatee. Going into the game Fort Myers was the favorite by both Calpreps and the Lazindex. What I do know is by the 2QT North Fort Myers was up on Fort Myers 26-7 and that was the score going into half. At that point Fort Myers once the 3rd QT started, proceeded to fight its way back. 53 yard FG made in it 10-26 in the 3rd, then a 5 yard TD run made it 16-26 with Foty Myers attempting a 2 point play which was unsucessful. North Fort Myers then connected on a 70 pass play for a TD to make it 33-16 in the 3rd QT. A 20 yard TD run by Fort Myers in the 4th QT makes it 33-22 with Fort Myers missing on the PAT. With about 8 minutes left in the game Fort yers gets a INT, and then connect on a 10 yard play for a TD and this time was successful on the 2 point play to make it now 33-30 North Forth Myers.

Fort Myers get the ball with about 2 minutes left, but consecutive sacks put Fort Myers in a 3rd and 20+ yards siituation. Fort Myers turns the ball over on downs and it a win for North Fort Myers. Making both Fort Myers and North Fort Myers 5-1 for the season, with North Fort Myers only loss being a 51-7 loss to Port Charlotte.

Another big game for Lee County teams was a OT game between Dunbar and Naples, which Dunbar lost 21-20. Naples RB Shawn Simeon running for over 200 yards and scoring 2 TD's, the last TD coming in OT to secure the winning score. Naples was up 14-0 in the 2nd half. only to have Dunbar fight back to tie it up at 14 at the end on regulation. The last 3 games between these two teams have all been classics. Dunbar decide to go for the 2 point play in OT and failed gives you the final 21-20 score.

Finally, Bishop Verot knocked off previously undefeated First Baptist Academy 34-28 FBA had won its first 4 games by big scores, having knocked off Port Charlotte last week 31-13. Bishop Verot has played a pretty burtal schedule thus far, so I dont know you can call this a upset. Cant tell you much about this either other than it was 14-14 in the 3rd QT when FBA went up 21-14. From there Bishop Verot woud score 3 unanswered TD's to go up 34-21 before FBA scored late to give us the final 34-28.

Pirates and Indians anybody watch it?

I caught some of the last half, was wondering what you guys thought of the game. Venice gets in some high scoring games and finds a way to hold on - not sure I've ever seen a team with a defense giving up almost 45 points a game and not being a liability yet. PC back had 175yds against them.

This is one of the better teams PC has fielded. Want to hear from you guys who are good picking it apart to see what you think. How did Charles play against much better competition? Do they have the horses yet to get by Naples for the District title?

Venice 54 Cocoa 51 Final

Decided to go to this one, and boy what a game! With the game all tied up at 51, Venice had a 80 yard drive with about 1:21 left in the game, to kick a FG with about 3.4 seconds left in the game for the win. Venice's star RB Wilder left the game in the 2nd QT and from there Venice turned to its Soph work horse RB #21 Jones.......Im going to say he had between 20-30 carries, he also caught a nice pass out of the backfield for a TD. I really liked the Cocoa team, Venice hardly ever put pressure on the QB and Cocoa was able to mount a very effective ground game as well. The ref's unfortunately decided to get really involved in the later stages of the game with penalties......mostly benefiting Venice as well as allowed some questionable time clock management here and there......I dont want to say "Homer" but they were right there on the edge of it.

Peacock was his typical self, I want to say he had 5 consecutive onside kicks and recovered 3 of the 5, went for 2 points after consecutive Venice TD's. Cocoa missed a FG at the end of the 1st half, as well as muffed a PAT. Just a lot of offensive star power tonight on display from both teams!
