Todays contests feature Prince Avenue (from the Athens area), a little history......when I 1st moved to Athens, Prince Avenue Baptist Church was a rather large Baptist Church in Athens, with a very small private school that struggled to find 22 players for its football team. A new school was built out on some property closer to Oconee County, than in the immediate Athens area. Around 2005- 2010 a commitment was made to build a power house football program. They went out and hired Jeff Herron to build a powerhouse program. Herron had coach Oconee hs to a state title in 1999, and then was hired away by Camden County to build several state title teams there, so bringing Herron back was a bit of a homecoming......Herron is no longer at Prince Ave, but his fingerprints are all over what has become a small school state power!
Jefferson hs out of Jackson County, (I lived in Jackson County in a town called Commerce, which is adjacent to Athens). Jefferson was more known for its wrestling program when I moved to Commerce in 2001. It's a state Power in Wrestling, it also has a Beef O Brady's off of hwy 129 which is all decked out in Jefferson hs Red, White, and Blue. Jefferson lured a retired coach T McFerrin to lead its program. McFerrin had a history of building state title teams, the last I recall was at Elberton HS. In 2012 Jefferson won its 1st state title with McFerrin as its coach beating Calhoun HS, the same team it faces today in its state title contest. Jefferson since McFerrin has remained a state power for medium sized schools, playing regularly deep into the playoffs.
