So the top 3 countries, which sit at the bottom of the state as well as basically immediately adjacent to each other, over this time period accumulated 923 points. Find me another 3 county area physically together like those 3 in Florida, whos sum total points equal even 1/2 of the 923 points of Dade, Boward, and Palm Beach????

Yep. As you know, I've broken the state up into regions in the past. Using the point method I have the Regional Point Totals shown below. This is why I try to look at things from a population perspective.

Look at Sarasota County. 5 for 6. Thank you Cardinal Mooney in 1972 & 2021 and Venice in 2000, 2017 & 2021. I guess thank you to the Rams for reaching the semifinals in 1988. No thanks to my alma mater Sarasota and Booker.

Mark,

The 1st indication I can find of Riverview being in the playoffs during the 80's is 1988, when they played to the finals against Pine Forest. 1983 was the year Manatee claim its 1st state title against Southridge. Sprague prior to 1988 had a number of teams that were certainly capable of playing deep into the playoffs, but this was during the era of only district champs advancing to the playoffs. I dont believe even that great 1973 Riverview team led by Tony Green, a WR I believe his name was Willie Chestnut and QB Larry Berkery(sp?), ever made the playoffs? Sarasota made the playoffs in 76 and 77, losing in 76 in the semis to Miami Lakes 13-12.

Corrected. It’s a typo. Maybe it’s just difficult to give my rival any credit even though I had 2 sons play for them. The night my last was eliminated from the playoffs right after the game I told them I am now going back to being a Sailor. I received blank stares.

Gatorman, I just spoke to Jack Turner, GOTROJANSGO, who graduated from Coral Gables High. He remembers watching that game on a black and white TV which of course was a big deal especially back then. He told me the shoe that Larry Davidson wore to kick the winning field goal is bronzed with the label TROPHY KICK and is displayed in the trophy case at Coral Gables High.

I was too young to remember, but my Dad told me a story about Larry Smith of Robinson (played for Florida and later with the Rams), running all over Bobby Pette the night they played Manatee. Pette would later play for Bear Bryant at Alabama. Dad said back in te day Larry Smith and Robinson were a helluva of a team! Said they were very intimidating coming out of the locker room all dressed in Black.

* See visions of the Black Knight from Ivanhoe and the whole intimidation factor!
