In 1997 the school board of Volusia County instigated an extra requirement for student athletes to participate in high school sports. Beyond the 2.0 grade point average mandated by the FHSAA, prospective county athletes had to pass all classes regardless of grade point average. The thinking was that this would boost academic expectation for students who at that time were basically taking four classes per day. Now with most taking up to seven classes a day, and with a stronger emphasis on state wide test scores times have changed again here locally. Hopefully by giving the struggling student/athlete another chance to succeed instead of writing them off and them potentially dropping out of school they could improve their study habits and one day receive a college scholarship. At a minimum this equals the playing field for all 10 Volusia County high schools when competing with other state public high schools ....Sure would be nice to see a big hard hitting linebacker suddenly wearing that beautiful blue and gold..... wishful thinking

Maybe now they will look at their pay scale and adjust that...those poor saps are four years behind were their counter parts in other counties when it comes to what they are paid as teachers. Volusia County has hired 1 HFC out of the last 6 openings from outside the county...WHY??...because if you have more than 10 years of teaching experience you cannot get paid for those years...even then you will only get paid at what current teachers get paid which is 3 to 4 years less then your actual experience. Bottom line is you can hire a great coach that is young an inexperienced but not one with extensive experience. The days of hiring a coach with a lot of experience are gone here in Volusia until the School Board decides the teachers should get paid for their years of service.

Unfortunately that is the trend statewide. Most counties are giving credit for experience past 9-10 years. Additionally, the amount paid by the counties for head coach football coaches is usually only a percentage of a new teachers' salary (~10-20%) except in a couple of panhandle counties. As for the change, I wish all school districts would have followed Volusia County's model instead.
